Understanding your IP lookup results

When you open this page, the server sees your connection arriving from a single IP address. That is your public IP. The other details above are derived from that address:

  • IP version: IPv4 (for example 103.174.67.39) or IPv6 (for example 2001:db8::1). If your ISP supports IPv6, your browser usually prefers it.
  • ASN and ISP: the network that announces your IP block to the internet via BGP.
  • Location: an estimate from a geolocation database, not your exact physical location.
  • Cloudflare data center: the nearest point serving your connection to this site, useful for seeing how your traffic is routed.

Public IP vs local IP

The address shown in your laptop's Wi-Fi settings, such as 192.168.1.5, is a local (private) IP. Your router translates it to a public IP via NAT when you access the internet. If your public IP falls within 100.64.0.0/10, your network is behind your ISP's CGNAT and cannot be reached directly from outside.

When do you need a static IP?

A static IP is needed whenever a service must be reachable from the internet at a fixed address: an on-premises mail or web server, a site-to-site VPN, remote access to CCTV or an NVR, and IP whitelisting with banks or partners.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a public IP address?

Your public IP address is the address that servers on the internet see when you connect. It usually belongs to your office or home router, or to your ISP if your network sits behind CGNAT. It is not the address shown on your laptop.

What is an ASN?

An ASN (Autonomous System Number) is a unique number for a network that announces its own IP routes via BGP, such as an ISP, a data center provider or a large enterprise. The ASN tells you which network carries your connection to the internet.

Why is the location shown different from where I am?

Location is estimated from an IP geolocation database, not from GPS. It often points to the city where the ISP registered its IP block, so it can differ from your actual location.

Why does my IP address keep changing?

Many home and mobile ISPs assign dynamic IPs that change when the modem restarts or the connection reconnects. Servers, site-to-site VPNs and remote CCTV access usually need a static public IP.

Does Cloudku store my IP address from this page?

This page only shows your connection details back to you and does not save them to a database.

Need IP transit or a static IP for your servers?

Cloudku provides IP transit and colocation from Surabaya, Indonesia, for ISPs, service providers and businesses, run by its own network team.
